Introduction to Physical AI & Humanoid Robotics

What is Physical AI?

Physical AI represents the convergence of artificial intelligence and the physical world. Unlike traditional AI systems that operate purely in digital spaces, Physical AI systems must navigate, understand, and interact with the real world. This includes robots that can perceive their environment, make decisions, and execute actions in real-time while adapting to the complexities and uncertainties of physical reality.

Physical AI systems face unique challenges:

  • Real-time constraints: Decisions must be made within strict time limits
  • Uncertainty: Sensors provide noisy, incomplete information about the world
  • Embodiment: The physical form of the system affects its capabilities and limitations
  • Safety: Actions must be safe for both the system and its environment

Why Humanoid Robotics?

Humanoid robots represent one of the most ambitious frontiers in robotics. These systems are designed to operate in human-centric environments, interact naturally with humans, and potentially perform tasks that require human-like dexterity and mobility. Humanoid robotics combines:

  • Bipedal locomotion: Walking on two legs like humans
  • Human-like manipulation: Using hands and arms for complex tasks
  • Natural interaction: Communicating through speech, gestures, and expressions
  • Social integration: Functioning effectively in human spaces

Course Philosophy

This textbook takes a comprehensive, hands-on approach to learning Physical AI and Humanoid Robotics. We believe that true understanding comes from building and experimenting with real systems, not just reading about them. Each module builds upon the previous one, creating a solid foundation that progresses from basic concepts to advanced applications.

The course emphasizes:

  • Practical implementation: Every concept includes code examples and exercises
  • Real-world applications: Examples that reflect actual challenges in robotics
  • Modular learning: Each module can be studied independently while building on previous knowledge
  • Safety-first approach: All code and exercises prioritize safe robot operation

Weekly Overview

The course is structured over 11 weeks of content (Weeks 3-13, with Weeks 1-2 as preparation):

Module 1: ROS 2 (Weeks 3-5)

  • Week 3: Introduction to ROS 2 and basic concepts
  • Week 4: Nodes, topics, services, and parameters
  • Week 5: URDF modeling and launch files

Module 2: Digital Twin (Weeks 6-7)

  • Week 6: Gazebo physics simulation and environment building
  • Week 7: Unity visualization and sensor simulation

Module 3: NVIDIA Isaac (Weeks 8-10)

Learning Outcomes

By completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Design, implement, and deploy humanoid robots using modern robotics frameworks
  • Create digital twins for simulation and testing of robotic systems
  • Implement AI-powered perception, navigation, and manipulation
  • Integrate vision-language-action systems for natural human-robot interaction
  • Build conversational robotics applications using LLMs and voice processing
  • Apply sim-to-real transfer techniques for real-world robot deployment

Prerequisites

This course assumes:

  • Basic programming experience (Python preferred)
  • Understanding of linear algebra and calculus
  • Familiarity with Linux command line
  • Basic knowledge of physics and mechanics

No prior robotics experience is required, as we'll build up concepts from the ground up.

Hardware Requirements

To fully experience this course, you'll need access to:

High-Performance Workstation

  • GPU: RTX 4070 Ti or better (recommended: RTX 4080/4090)
  • CPU: Intel i7/AMD Ryzen 9 or better
  • RAM: 64GB or more
  • OS: Ubuntu 22.04 LTS

Physical AI Edge Kit

  • Compute: Jetson Orin Nano or Jetson Orin NX
  • Depth Camera: Intel RealSense D400 series or similar
  • IMU: USB-based IMU for orientation sensing
  • Audio: ReSpeaker 4-mic array or similar

Robot Options

  1. Proxy Approach: Simulated robot with remote control capabilities
  2. Miniature Humanoid: Small-scale humanoid robot platform
  3. Premium Lab: Full-sized humanoid robot (optional for advanced users)

Getting Started

Begin with Module 1 to establish the foundational concepts of ROS 2. Each module builds upon the previous one, so we recommend following the sequence as outlined in the sidebar. However, advanced users may skip ahead if they're already familiar with specific concepts.
